Picnic’s History

In the first two years, the Picnic was a local event, organized by the Glider School and Model Airplane Club “Zar” from Miedzybrodzie Zywieckie and with the participation of the German Model Club colleagues from Rangsdorf, near Berlin.  The German Club runs the Bucker Museum located in the same town.

The idea for the gatherings was born of an accidental encounter between the modelers from Miedzybrodzie and their German colleagues.  At that time, the German modelers were visiting Mr. Karasiewicz’s († 2006) production facility, located in Bielsko, that was still producing Bucker airplanes.

These Picnics, although initially very small, gained increasing popularity that quickly necessitated formalized organization establishing safety requirements.  A decision was made to expand and transform the gathering into an international model airplane flying event.

By 2005 the Picnic had already hosted more than 100 pilots.

In 2006 we decided to extend our get-together, adding a week-long flying event on the Kamionka Mountain in Bezmiechowa.  The Academic Glide Center established on the site offers modern hotel accommodations and hangar storage.  By 2011, Bezmiechowa will have hosted its 6th annual meeting.  In the photo galleries indicated above, you will be able to find photographs from Bezmiechowa.

Bezmiechowa is a small village situated at the foothills of the Bieszczady Mauntains. Bezmiechowa is a historic village and a place of great interest to Polish sport gliding.  The local area is surrounded by primordial natural beauty, and besides flying model airplanes or gliders, one can undertake side trips or just go for a swim in the nearby man-made Solina lake.

From top of the Kamionka Mountain, it is possible to glide down the maintain slope (a unique method of glide launching by using gravity) and fly model airplanes of any size.  Glider towing is also available.  The AOS Hotel, with its restaurant, serves as an excellent place of rest and relaxation. The proximity to Slovakia and Ukraine provides the participant with additional opportunities for making interesting day trips.
